The Hifumi Society celebrates and preserves Japanese and Japanese American culture, heritage, and history in the Spokane community. At Valleyfest, visitors can learn the art of origami through hands-on folding activities and experience the beauty of traditional Japanese clothing. Guests are invited to try on a kimono and learn how a traditional kimono and obi are worn and styled.

Create an origami cup that really holds water! Explore the beautiful elements of traditional kimono attire—and, if you’d like, let us dress you in a kimono.

1:00 – 4:00 p.m. — Explore Indian

Spokane Desi Indian Women’s Club was envisioned by the visionary community leader Sowmya Surapaneni, and brought to life by a group of liberated women. The Spokane Desi Indian Women’s Club is organically evolving into a vibrant women’s hub grounded in the simple, powerful spirit of sisterhood.

5:00 – 6:00 p.m. — North West Hula

You are invited to join the North West Hula for a short hula demonstration. During this session, you will learn basic hula movements and discover how they are used to tell a story. Following the demonstration, we will combine these movements to learn and dance to a fun song.

1:00 – 3:00 p.m. — Fencing Club

Coaches at the club have a variety of experiences in teaching the different weapons: Foil, Epee, and Sabre.

Students learn basic footwork and blade work, and how to combine the two together in the beginning classes. Intermediate and advanced students are introduced to electric fencing. Students at this level learn more complex movements and advanced strategy skills.

** (Due to liability, our insurance will not cover someone to fence without a national membership).

Who can join: We teach students from 10 years old to 60+

What you will learn: An introduction to the 3 weapons, their history, and the differences between them. Students will be fencing ien lectric and non-electric bouts to demonstrate the skill and speed of the sport.
